Letter: How do you put a price on healthcare?

In response to Graham Burns, Shropshire Star, August 26. It's unfortunate that the authorities have made the decision to close one of the A&E departments, as I believe they should be retained at both hospitals.

What right does anyone have to put a price on anyone's health?

We have seen the deterioration of common sense regarding our NHS, especially in the last decade where cuts have led to longer waiting times and cancellations of long-awaited operations, mainly due to the misguided and totally inappropriate actions of successive governments and politicians.

They come up with so many harebrained ideas of how to improve "the service", as they call it and – contrary to the popular belief we are indoctrinated with by governments and politicians that "things can't get any worse" – unfortunately they always seem to.

I am aware of the population growth on the eastern edge of Shropshire, Mr Burns, but Shrewsbury and its surrounding areas are also seeing thousands of new houses built. So that excuse doesn't really have any bearing on the situation.

As I have already said both hospitals should retain their A&E departments, and it is extremely unfair if either lose what is an essential service. Unfortunately the outcome will depend upon penny-pinching politicians who, as we know, don't live in the "real world".
