Attingham Park's first ever Harvest Fair has been hailed a great success.

More than 5,000 people flocked to the estate near Atcham at the weekend to enjoy seeing the celebration of harvest time.

Foodies were well catered for with plenty of local traders' food stalls to browse and taste samples from. And local celebrity chef Marcus Bean was on hand to give out advice and cooking tips.

Attingham's own gardeners were showcasing the ancient art of apple pressing and visitors were able to discover more about the autumn traditions of the wider Attingham estate.

The estate's wardens and some of their estate tenants showcased everything that 'harvest' means on the whole 4,000-acre Attingham estate.

Claire Tafft, visitor experience manager at the estate, said: "It was great and a really worthwhile thing to do.

"We had 5,500 people through the gates over the weekend and everyone seemed to be really enjoying themselves. We were very lucky with the weather and it seemed that everyone had a great time.

"We had displays of machinery from the farm and also animals from Home Farm. The cooking demonstrations that we had were also very well attended. There was one on chocolate which everyone seemed to enjoy and, of course, Marcus Bean went down very well. We hope that we will be repeating the Harvest Fair next year."

This year has been a bumper one for apples, and visitors heard about the 37 varieties growing on the estate.

The Harvest Fair replaces the Frost Fair which last year attracted 15,000 visitors over three days. That was cancelled for this year after logistical problems meant it became a victim of its own success.
