Letter: Dave's Big Society was just a great con
Back in 2010, David Cameron, in the run up to the general election, was full of his great idea for Britain in the future.
"The Big Society" was going to bring all sections of society together and enable us to solve the economic problems to the benefit of everyone.
Funnily enough, when pressed, he wasn't able to tell us how it would work and what it would involve. We, foolishly, just dismissed it as another sound bite to try to make the Tory Party appear inclusive and that it would be working for the benefit of us all. As if it ever had?
It was fortunate for Dave that he was never forced to spell out what the Big Society would mean for us. If he had, he would never have been elected. Now it is clear to us all. Essentially central government withdraws funding and resources for all public services and in a spirit of devolution says "it's your problem, you sort it out".
We can now see the disintegration and shutting down of local services, health, education, care for old, young, disabled and loss of any form of compassion in society. Those who are rich enough can buy their way out of the mess. They can also get even richer by running the privatised companies who are taking over the service provision that was once the duty of government. For the rest of us its "you're on your own".
I don't know about creating a Big Society, but Dave is doing his best to dismantle society as we understand it.
