£1 million spend on CCTV
The county's police and crime commissioner has committed to spend £1 million for new CCTV cameras.
The CCTV cameras will be spread across the West Mercia police force area, which covers Shropshire, Herefordshire and Worcestershire.
PCC John Campion says up to £65,000 per year will be given to the five Community Safety Partnerships (CSPs) across West Mercia to be used on new and improved equipment until March 2020.
The CSPs are being asked to work with their local policing teams and communities. They will each submit an application detailing the areas of need and where they believe the cameras should be placed, or which cameras need to be upgraded.
Mr Campion said: “I recognise that CCTV is an extremely valuable resource. Not only can the presence of a camera make people feel more secure, but by improving the cameras, and updating the equipment, it will ensure better quality of images which will assist the police and call handlers in the call centre.
“It is also about partnership working to ensure that the funding is being spent in the areas of highest need.”
