36 YEARS to convert all Shropshire Council street lights to LED
It will take another 36 years for all of Shropshire's street lights to be switched to LED, it has been revealed.
Shropshire Council will not exchange the lights in the county until 2054.
In a stark contrast neighbouring Telford & Wrekin Council has said the street lighting in the borough will be fully LED by March next year.
Shropshire Council owns almost 20,000 street lights, and currently just over 3,000 are LED.
Steve Davenport, Shropshire Council cabinet member for transport and highways, said the council is exploring funding options to reduce the time it would take to switch the lights.
He said: “Shropshire Council owns and maintains 19,601 street lights, 3,325 (20 per cent) of these being LED lanterns.
“With current funding levels it would take 36 years, until 2054, for Shropshire Council to switch all of its street lighting to LED; however, that programme could be accelerated if any future bids for funding are successful.
“We are exploring funding options to reduce the time it would take to switch all street lighting to LED.”
