Retired professionals David and Sue - who have asked for their surnames to be withheld - have lived in their property in Meole Brace for 20 years.
They are both aged in their late 70s and worked for decades as teachers, and as David puts it, they are looking forward to "looking after ourselves for the last few years of our lives."
And when some slick salesmen visited their home in 2023 with professional-looking videos, polished certificates and promises of saving money on their home insulation they thought what could go wrong and decided to spend around £5,000 on having it installed.
David said that 'alarm bells' started in their minds when three or four months later they came back to 'check' on the foam.
"They gave us a horrendous scare story that it needed replacing as soon as possible," said David.
"It felt wrong so we stopped them and told them never to come back to the house."
The couple then paid for a surveyor to check and they came back saying that the foam was inappropriate for their home. It had trapped condensation which was wrecking their roof.
