One Shropshire town has been heralded among the happiest in the UK by the results of a new survey.

Online retailer Furniturebox surveyed around 5,000 people, compiling a list of 70 of the happiest places in the UK.

Newport came tops as the happiest in Shropshire, ranking 33rd happiest in the country.

Locations were ranked according to the beauty of the surroundings and green spaces, provision of good state schools and affordable housing, as well as access to quality pubs, restaurants, independent shops and cultural attractions.

The furniture retailer described Newport as "a small, friendly market town" and commended it for being the home of Shropshire's "highest rated" secondary schools, Newport Girls' and Haberdashers' Adams.

They also pointed out the town's easy access to Telford, Shrewsbury and Stafford and its collection of popular pubs including The Fox, The New Inn, The Swan and The Shakespeare Inn.

While no other town in Shropshire made it into the top 70, in second place in Shropshire was Much Wenlock, Market Drayton was third, Ludlow was fourth and Oswestry was fifth.

A Furniturebox spokesperson said: “Newport is the happiest place to live in Shropshire. All 70 places on the list would have been worthy winners and show why the UK is such a wonderful place to live, loved by visitors from all over the world.

“Most of the locations in the top 70 are not the most affluent in their localities and have access to some affordable housing. The survey shows that the happiest places are not defined by wealth but by the quality of life within them.”
