Telford Magistrates Court was told that Tracey Sutton was going through a mental health crisis at the time of the attack on the animal in Shrewsbury on March 12 this year.

Sara Beddow, prosecuting, told the court that Sutton, aged 53, put a cord around the cat's neck and tried to strangle it. She then put a pillow over its head.

Ms Beddow said that the cat survived the attack but suffered some ill effects.

Sutton, of Maple Drive, Shrewsbury, will be disqualified from owning animals following her conviction, the court was told.
