Rhayader Town Council would like to set up a community energy scheme with Welsh Water to try and retrieve some of the money that is leaving the Elan Valley dams at the moment.

Some members of the council recently met with Mike Booth, attractions manager at Welsh Water.

Rhayader Mayor Councillor Clare Evans said members had given their opinion of a planning application for a new powder handling building is required to be installed within the existing Water Treatment Works (WTW) at Elan Valley.

The powdered chemical (fluoride) will be delivered in tonne bags and this proposed building will allow operators on Site to manually empty the tonne bag in a hopper system safely and efficiently.

She said the council had also spoken about wanting to create a community energy scheme in the Elan Valley to try and get some of the money back that is currently leaving the dams.

Councillor Clare said they need to look at other schemes that are in operation to see how they do it and then look at if they could set up a scheme for the future.

“This might end up generating the kind of money we need to a leisure centre. It would be bigger than a town council project but we could look for experts to set up a group and run the scheme,” she added.

Members agreed to discuss the idea again in the future.
