Shaun Davies November 11 column
On this Remembrance Day, I wish to pay heartfelt tribute to our fallen heroes. Today, we come together as a community and as a nation to honour the brave men and women who sacrificed so much for our freedom.
I would also like to thank everyone involved in organising the Remembrance services across Telford this past weekend.
This year, I was privileged to commemorate one of Telford’s fallen heroes, John Price, by placing a poppy cross in the Constituency Garden of Remembrance in Westminster. My sincere thanks to John’s family for sharing his story.
Next, I’d like to share some key updates from the Budget, as I know this will be at the top of minds for many. I know how tough things have been in Telford, with the Conservatives' economic mismanagement driving up mortgage and rent costs, slowing growth, and causing our public services to deteriorate.
This Labour Government is committed to supporting working people in Telford by keeping our promise not to raise National Insurance, Income Tax, or VAT. We will focus on growing the economy through investment to rebuild Britain and fix our schools, hospitals, and roads.
I was particularly pleased to see substantial investments in our schools and education system, including the launch of free breakfast clubs, the rebuilding of 500 schools, and £1 billion for children with Special Educational Needs (SEN). I will keep fighting to ensure Telford receives its fair share of this vital funding and remains at the forefront of these important developments.
The State Pension Triple Lock will be maintained, providing over 12 million pensioners with up to £475 more next year. In recent weeks, I’ve spoken with many pensioners at my engagement sessions and shared guidance on checking their eligibility for pension credit, as thousands of entitlements remain unclaimed.
We’ve also seen the biggest cash boost to our NHS since 2010, outside of the Covid period, marking an end to some of the most challenging times in its history. This £25 billion increase in the NHS budget over the next two years will help reduce waiting times and improve services.
Finally, thank you to everyone who has reached out to me regarding the Assisted Dying Bill which is scheduled for its second reading in Parliament at the end of November. I am taking this time to carefully consider the perspectives of our community, along with insights from local experts and colleagues. Your views are essential in helping me understand our community’s diverse opinions and will directly shape my approach.
