Hundreds of veterans, serving personnel and Shropshire residents came together for a parade in the county town that was followed by a memorial service in the Quarry.

The town's Mayor David Vasmer led a civic procession with units from the Armed Forces and service organisations from Shrewsbury Castle, led by the Bligny Band and Bugles from Shropshire Army Cadet Force.

A procession left the castle at 10.30am, following the route of Castle Gates, Castle Street, Pride Hill, Mardol Head and St John’s Hill to the Quarry, before the service followed at the War Memorial at 10.50am.

Buglers sounded the Last Post before a two minutes’ silence was observed.

Wreaths were then laid by representatives from various organisations including the armed forces, police, ambulance and fire services, scout and guide groups, councils, and more.

"A fellow councillor arrived and ended up being about 10 rows back. There were lots of people there.

"It's a very important event. What makes Shrewsbury really special is the way we put so much effort into these sorts of events like the Battle of Britain commemoration.

"It's very special for the town. Next year we've also got the 80th anniversary of the Second World War so I hope we will have an even bigger turnout next year."
