Mabel Mae Agnew entered Cake International, where bakers and artists from all over compete and showcase incredible talents, for the first time this year.

The self-taught baker based in Penybont near Llandrindod Wells scooped a bronze award for her shop-front cake in the single-tiered celebration cake category.

She also received merits for her ‘pair of shoes’ illusion cake and ‘breakfast on a tray’ cupcake display.

Mabel said: “This was my very first time entering, so being part of such a high-level competition and surrounded by so much creativity was both nerve-wracking and inspiring!

“Winning bronze for my Shop Front cake in the Single-Tiered Celebration Cake category was such an incredible honour.

“The judges called it “amazingly beautiful” and complimented the “lovely concept” and “neatly done” miniature food details, which made a week of hard work worth it.

“I also received merits for my Pair of Shoes illusion cake and Breakfast on a Tray cupcake display, which was the cherry on top!”

Mabel started her cake making business in November 2020 and has previously won first prize at the Royal Welsh Winter Fair for her novelty Christmas cake and second prize for her traditional Christmas cake.

She worked at Tesco and the NHS before turning her hobby into her business ‘Incredibly Indulgent by Mabel Mae’.

Now Mabel makes all kinds of cakes for birthdays, weddings, baby shower parties and baptisms and clients can choose the flavour, and type – such as cupcakes, cookies, macaroons and brownies.

She moved from the Philippines to Mid Wales 11 years ago and owned a catering business in her home country for 16 years.

Mabel said: “Moving into the UK from the Philippines, allowed me to explore and enhance my creative skills in baking. I’ve discovered how fairly convenient it had become to acquire the right tools to turn my vision of a cake into reality.

“This recognition at my first Cake International is a huge milestone in my journey as a cake artist, and it’s encouraged me to push my skills even further.”
