Two arrested after driver dies in crash which also seriously injures child

One driver has died and a child was seriously injured in a Mid Wales crash.

The tragic incident took place on the A484, at Belan, near Welshpool, at around 6.15pm yesterday. 

Police say the crash involved three cars - a red BMW X3, a blue Audi S4, and a white Toyota Yaris, with the road between Welshpool and Berriew closed overnight while investigations took place.

The red BMW and the blue Audi were travelling northbound towards Welshpool, while the white Toyota was travelling in the opposite direction, towards Newtown.

A statement from Dyfed Powys Police said that the driver of the Yaris had been killed in the crash, while a child in the car had been flown to hospital with "serious injuries".

The statement said: "Sadly, the driver of the white Toyota Yaris died at the scene. A child passenger of the same car was air lifted to hospital with serious injuries.

"HM coroner and next of kin is aware. Specially trained police officers are supporting their family."

The police said that two other men had been arrested in the aftermath of the incident.

The statement said: "One man, aged 29 years has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and drug driving.

"A second man, aged 33 years has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving."

The road was closed overnight while specialist collision investigators carried out enquiries.

It re-opened at 9.50am today.
