One-year-old Belgian Malinois, Lexi, arrived at Hilbrae Rescue Kennels seven months ago. She was just 10 months old and pregnant.

Four days after her arrival, she gave birth to three puppies - two didn't survive. Despite being so young, staff at the rescue kennels say Lexi was "a great mum".

Donna Griffiths from Hilbrae said: "The remaining puppy has since gone on to be assessed to be a police dog and is progressing really well.

"Lexi was assessed herself by the police and although she has the correct temperament, she was just too small."

Since she arrived at the kennels, Donna said Lexi has had no interest from potential owners.

"Lexi is very toy driven and can play for hours with her toys, she's very eager to learn and has responded very well to training," said Donna, who also described the young dog as "excitable" and "extremely loyal".

Ideally, Lexi would need an adult only working or very active home, with someone that understands the breed.

Anyone interested in adopting Lexi is asked to contact Hilbrae on 01952 541254
