Organisers announced on social media today that the town's festive event, which was due to take place on Saturday, has been cancelled due to "rain and high winds".

The post added that organisers are working with contractors, entertainers and local businesses to "explore their availability" and hold the Christmas lights switch-on a week later on Saturday, November 30.

The post said: "Regrettably, we have made the difficult decision to postpone the event due to the rain and high winds this weekend.

"The safety of the public and everyone involved is paramount. We are currently coordinating with our contractors, entertainers, and local businesses to explore their availability for Saturday November 30.

"We hope to relocate some elements of the event to this new date and will provide further updates as soon as possible.

"In the meantime, we sincerely apologise for this disappointing news. Please save the date for Saturday November 30 - we are trying our very best to get the event arranged for then."
