Once again, traders are urging residents to support their campaign to be crowned 'Britain’s Favourite Market'. The popular indoor market has won the title three times since 2018 and for two years running.
Members of the public and Shropshire residents are being asked to vote for their favourite market in an annual national poll organised by the National Association of British Market Authorities (NABMA).
This year's voting began in late October and continues until December 13.
Winning the title is considered as the most prestigious accolade in the Great British Market Awards held each year in January.
The first part of the voting campaign traditionally involves a public vote to whittle markets down to a shortlist. Judges then choose a winner from the shortlist.
In Shropshire, Market Drayton, Oswestry, Bishop's Castle, Bridgnorth, Church Stretton, Ellesmere, Ludlow, Much Wenlock, Newport, Wellington, Wem, and Whitchurch markets will all be hoping to claim the accolade.
But, for the last two years, Shrewsbury has amassed so many public votes that it emerged as the clear winner.
The market, that is run jointly by Shropshire Council and Shrewsbury Town Council, has transformed dramatically during the last 12 years. It features 54 independent traders, including cafes and bars, and is located between Shoplatch and Claremont Street - beneath the town’s iconic post-modernist clock tower.
Market trader Jo Bloodworth, of The Little Shop of Joy said: “Our market is truly unique with 50 plus businesses under our beloved clock tower. We are a supportive community of traders who are passionate about our businesses and for the market as a whole.
“Talking to tourists daily, we realise how lucky we are to have this market when many towns and cities are without. Ask any trader in here how they feel, and they will likely say the same thing, ‘The best place I’ve ever worked!'
“Thank you to our amazing locals and visitors for supporting us and we hope you will vote for Shrewsbury Indoor Market again this year.”
Market fans are allowed to vote once per day. The winners of the Great British Market Awards will be announced at the NABMA annual conference in Birmingham in January.
