Doing the honour this year was the overall winner of Newport Town Council's Christmas card competition, Isla Hearsey.

For her snowman-themed design, 8-year-old Isla bagged a reindeer-pulled sleigh ride to the stage, where she had the joy of lighting up the town.

As is tradition, a living nativity set up shop on St Mary's Street, while a funfair-lined Lower Bar and St Nicholas Church were filled with the sound of Christmas carols.

A spokesperson for Newport Town Council said: "From sparkling decorations to cheerful carols and festive treats, the holiday spirit was everywhere. Thank you to everyone who joined us to make the night so special!

"A huge round of applause for Isla, this year’s Christmas card competition winner, who had the honour of lighting up the town!"
