Filming for Peaky Blinders rolls into town and closes waterways near Shropshire border

Filming for the Peaky Blinders film took place at the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct near Chirk today, resulting in the closure of waterways and a public towpath.

Crowds gathered as a helicopter associated with the filming swooped and operated from above the Trevor Basin.

The area was cordoned off for what appears to be the production crew of Peaky Blinders.

Local business Rebel Dragon Designs documented some of the filming activities on Sunday morning and shared images and videos on social media capturing the event.

A post showed a helicopter arriving and said: "Trevor Basin is closed off today for filming. Rumour has it, it’s Peaky Blinders. Looks what’s just arrived!"

Peaky Blinders is an extremely popular and critically-acclaimed crime drama series following the titular gang and the Shelby family in Birmingham in the interwar years, starring Irish Oscar winner Cillian Murphy.

It first premiered on the BBC before becoming a familiar sight on televisions around the world. 

Filming at the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct is part of the recently begun production of a feature-length film that will act as a sequel to the series.

Set against the backdrop of the Second World War, it will aims to further explore the Shelby narrative, and is expected to introduce both new and familiar characters.
