A historic Kington building has still not been repaired one year after a man drove into it.

The town council says the hole at the Market Hall is having an impact on tourism, visitors and the town centre.

A hole was left in the Market Hall at around 4am on November 26 2023, just before the town was due to enjoy its festive light switch-on event and the annual popular food festival.

One year on and the bricks that were knocked out still remain in a pile, with a public alleyway closed off.

At a recent town council meeting town clerk Liz Kelso said Herefordshire Council said they have lost four people from the maintenance team since March and so they have a priority list.

She said they have a new surveyor starting in March so hopefully that may help.

Herefordshire Council said some crucial bricks appear to have gone missing.

Deputy Mayor Councillor Martin Woolford said a reclamation yard in Hereford has lots of similar bricks.

Ms Kelso said: “So we do not seem to have gone anywhere in the last year. The bricks that survived the crash were piled up nearby and they were then moved to the side of the building by the fire service. Any debris was probably dust in their opinion.

“I have told them the impact that this is having on tourism, visitors and the impact on our town centre when we are trying to put on events and improve things in town, but we can’t fix a hole in the wall.”
