Councillor Lezley Picton, Conservative leader of Shropshire Council, delivered the unexpected update on the future of Meole Brace Golf Club at this week's meeting of her cabinet.

The issue came up as the cabinet moved to sign off on a service level agreement with Shrewsbury Town Council over grounds maintenance.

Labour Councillor Alan Mosley, representing the town council, said it was happy to reach the agreement with Shropshire Council over the arrangement, and had even accepted a reduction in the amount of money to deliver the work.

But, he said, the town council objected to the removal of the maintenance of the golf club from the agreement.
