The roof of Pentre Baptist Church was lifted off and dumped as tornado-like winds tore through the tiny settlement of Mochdre on Saturday afternoon.

Some of the gravestones at the chapel near Newtown were also smashed and bent as all the debris came crashing down to earth.

Jonathan Rees, proprietor of the organic meats company Craig Farm Organics, is leading the clean up efforts.

“The whole community are devastated,” said Mr Rees who believes that a brand new chapel will have to replace the 170-year-old structure.

“We believe that God works in mysterious ways. The building was not perfect and had no disabled access.

“The loss adjusters are coming tomorrow and I believe that it will not be possible to repair it.
