Historic England has officially launched the sale of a c.3.145 (net) acre site within the grounds of Shrewsbury Flaxmill Maltings.
The land is already earmarked for a number of homes, with plans to build them at the front of the site, between the main building and St Michael's Street.
Homes would also be built to the north east of the building, as well as on a vacant plot to the north east, on the other side of the road entering the Flaxmill site.
Interested bidders have until the end of January 2025 to submit their expressions of interest for the land.
A notice publicising the sale states: "This brownfield site presents a rare opportunity to accommodate a new development of residential homes around the newly restored historic mill complex.
"The Main Mill has been sympathetically restored and converted for commercial use on four floors creating over 2600m² of high-quality commercial space.
"On the ground floor there is a public exhibition telling the history of Flaxmill Maltings, a shop and a café run by an independent local operator.
"The first phase of the project restored the Main Mill and attached Kiln and consolidated some of the adjacent historic buildings – the Cross Mill, the Dye House, the Warehouse and the Apprentice House (all Grade I and II*) and surrounding public realm, including roads and other infrastructure.
"The restoration of the Main Mill and Kiln has been widely applauded winning numerous awards, including both regional and national RIBA Awards, Civic Trust Conservation Award and the Europa Nostra Award for conservation and adaptive use."
Duncan Wilson CBE, Historic England’s Chief Executive, said: “We believe that the brownfield site around the Grade I listed Main Mill at Shrewsbury Flaxmill Maltings provides an opportunity to deliver an exceptional, exemplary residential development which has the potential to enhance its historic setting.”
Lambert Smith Hampton has been appointed to lead the procurement and successful bidders are expected to be announced by mid 2025.
James Strong, Director at LSH, said: “We are seeking an experienced developer to deliver exemplary residential development around the restored mill. The development will further breathe new life into the area and bring with it new homes and jobs and improve the overall visitor experience."
