New Shrewsbury cake shop inspired by baker's late grandmother and memories of first cake they made together
An award-winning Shropshire baker is to open her first cake shop close to Shrewsbury town centre and will dedicate it to the memory of her late grandmother, who inspired her love of baking.
Annie Davies, owner of The Sugar Cart Cakes, has taken a lease from Marshall & Marshall Ltd of premises at 118 Longden Coleham, with the shop to be called The Love Spoon Bakery.
Annie said: “My grandma’s name before she married was Janet Jones and she inspired my love of baking.
"In her youth, she was the National Hostess of Wales and travelled the world in full Welsh costume handing love spoons to world leaders. She also had a Welsh talk show.
“Grandma always had a picture of the first cake that we ever baked together next to her.
"I must have been aged about three at the time.
“It was a Cadbury Flake Cake and she had the original recipe on a postcard along with the picture of the cake we made together."
Annie added: “I’m so excited about opening the new shop. Longden Coleham is such a nice community, and we have had lots of people welcoming us to the area.
"I’m hoping the shop will be open early in the new year, but if I manage to make it happen I will try and do a little pop-up shop first at some point this month."
Particularly renowned for creating bespoke wedding cakes, Annie also bakes delicious celebration cakes for every occasion.
The Love Spoon Bakery’s new home forms part of a popular local shopping parade and extends in total to 304 sq ft.
Part of a two-storey block of shops, with independent residential apartments above, it also benefits from a car park space to the rear of the property.
Josh Hyde, who handled the letting for Towler Shaw Roberts, said: “Opening a shop represents an exciting new venture for Annie Davies, who has previously had a bakery at home.
"The Love Spoon Bakery will be another excellent addition to the area. “As well as her flourishing wedding cake business, having a shop allows Annie to offer a takeaway cake counter, as well as providing space for people to attend cake decorating classes.
“The property at Longden Coleham has been extensively refurbished to include an attractive shop frontage and a tiled floor, and we wish The Love Spoon Bakery every success.”
