The National Garden Scheme has received the most generous donation from the Julia Rausing Trust of £1.5 million, to support its community gardens programme for five years from 2025.

In recent years the scheme gave around £250,000 annually in donations up to a maximum of £5,000 to community gardens. This came as part of the centenary fundraising programme.

Sadly, Julia Rausing died in April this year having been ill with cancer. But the scheme is delighted her husband Hans is going to host an open day for the National Garden Scheme in 2025, in the garden of their home in Gloucestershire.

In 2024 the scheme’s Community Garden Grants funded 89 new projects with a total of £232,000.

Four recipients were in Powys - Apple Blossom Social Enterprise CIC, £2,207; Cultivate (Cwm Harry) Cyfyngedig, £4,855; Senni Village Hall, £1,132 and The Fathom Trust, £2,580.

The Garden Visitor’s Handbook for 2025 will be launched in February: copies can be ordered from ngs.org.uk/shop. Powys has three new village openings and 18 open by arrangement gardens of particular interest to groups.
