The 24-hour yellow warning for heavy rain comes into force at 6pm on Tuesday and will mean a very wet start to 2025.

A spokesperson for the Met Office said: “Beginning on Tuesday (New Year's Eve), persistent and at times heavy rainfall is expected as a band of rain becomes slow-moving across the region, accompanied by strong winds.

“There remains a bit of uncertainty around how this evolves on Wednesday morning, which will impact final rainfall totals, but rain is expected to clear to the southeast through Wednesday afternoon.

“30-50mm is expected fairly widely, with 60-80mm across west-facing hills.

“There is a chance a few locations could see in excess of 100mm during the event, with north Wales the most likely region to see these larger totals.”

The rain warning also covers Cheshire, Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent.

New Year's Day will see a wind warning kick in from 7am and last until the end of the first day of the new year. It covers most of the West Midlands, Wales and much of England.

A Met Office spokesperson said: “An area of low pressure is expected to track across England and Wales, with strong southwesterly winds on its southern flank.

“The strongest winds are expected across coastal regions in the west and south of the warning area, where gusts of 65-75mph are possible.

“Inland gusts will typically be in the 40-50mph range, but a brief spell of 60mph gusts is possible in association with the passage of an active, squally cold front during the afternoon.”
