Powys fleet managers collect national award

Fleet managers who oversee more than 500 vehicles and 1,000 drivers for Powys County Council have collected a national award from Logistics UK.

The council’s Fleet Management Team was named Public Services Operator of the Year at Logistics UK Magazine’s Logistics Awards 2024 which were held in London in December.

The team beat off competition from the Clancy Group, Lothian Buses, Scottish Water and Tower Transit to pick up the award.

Powys was recognised after becoming the first county council and first heavy goods vehicle (HGV) operator in Wales to become an accredited member of the DVSA’s (Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency) Earned Recognition Scheme.

This scheme recognises organisations with a strong vehicle and driver safety record, and which regularly share performance data with the DVSA.

Powys was also recognised for helping 20 of its employees to become qualified transport managers.

“Congratulations and well done to everyone involved,” said Councillor Jackie Charlton, Powys County Council’s Cabinet Member for a Greener Powys. “We are doing the right thing by prioritising the safety of our vehicles and drivers, and our investment in training helps to ensure resilience and a good knowledge base across our highways, waste and recycling, and transport teams.”

The competition was fiercer than ever, generating plenty of ‘heated debates’ among the judges, and all our winners can be justifiably satisfied that they are at the very top of their game.”
