Leaders at Telford Gurdwara (Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji Gurdwara) on Whitechapel Way in Priorslee have been given permission to build a new 4G sports pitch and playground on a greenfield area next to the temple.

The application, which was submitted in September, revealed plans for the 'Multi-Use Games Area' (MUGA) which could be used for a range of sports, including football, basketball and tennis.

"The MUGA will be constructed using high-quality, durable materials to ensure longevity and safety," the design and access statement reads.

"The playing surface will be made of synthetic turf (or tarmac, depending on the preference), and the area will be enclosed by secure, weather-resistant fencing approximately three to four meters in height to prevent ball egress and ensure the safety of both participants and bystanders."

It's proposed that the facility, which would be used solely by members and visitors, would be open at the same time as the gurdwara - used mainly at the weekend and "opened only when keys are requested by management".

"The proposed facility will feature appropriate markings for multiple sports and may include optional features such as floodlighting for extended use during evening hours," the application continues.

"The design will be compliant with all relevant accessibility standards to ensure the facility is inclusive and can be enjoyed by all members of the community, regardless of ability.

"This project is part of a broader initiatie to encourage active lifestyles, foster community engagement, and provide local youth with a safe and accessible space for physical activity.

"Our MUGA is designed for migrant/marginalised communities [and] encourage them into sport/exercise, which sets it apart from the existing MUGA’s in the area."
