Police in Shropshire said that two officers had reported a driver after the motorist "thought it would be a good idea to use their mobile phone, directly in front of a marked police vehicle".

West Mercia Police highlighted the incident on social media, saying two of its officers had been carrying out out enquiries into other offences in Whitchurch when they saw the driver.

A post on social media said: "PC Jones and PC Harper from North Shropshire Safer Neighbourhood Team were out on patrol yesterday completing enquiries into incidents of shoplifting, ASB and criminal damage in Whitchurch.

"Whilst doing so, the driver of this vehicle thought it would be a good idea to use their mobile phone, directly in front of a marked police vehicle.

"They were, of course, reported for the offence in question.

"Road safety is one of the priorities highlighted by Whitchurch Town Council as part of the Local Policing Community Charter and the team continue to work towards this."
