Man taken to hospital after being rescued from Newport canal by passers-by

Emergency services were called to Newport canal on Thursday after a man reportedly fell into the water.

West Midlands Ambulance Service and Shropshire Fire and Rescue were called to Lower Bar and Chetwynd End in Newport at around 1.45pm on Thursday.

According to the emergency services, a man had reportedly fallen into the canal and had been pulled from the water by members of the public. 

A spokesperson from West Midlands Ambulance Service said: "We were called to reports of a patient who had fallen into the water near to Chetwynd End at 1.47pm yesterday, one ambulance and a paramedic officer attended the scene.

"On arrival we discovered one patient, a man, who had been pulled from the water by bystanders. 

"Following treatment at the scene, the man was transported to Princess Royal Hospital."

Firefighters from Newport Fire Station also attended the scene to assist the ambulance service.
