Abbey Foregate in Shrewsbury has been completely shut to traffic since late on Wednesday afternoon.

The closure - between The Old Bell and Sainsbury's - has been put in place by Severn Trent to allow its workers to repair a burst pipe.

There had initially been two-way traffic lights in place for the work, but now a full closure is in place.

The route is one of the major arteries on Shrewsbury's road network.

Severn Trent said its crews are working to get the road open "as quickly as possible", but did not confirm a timescale for the closure.

A Severn Trent spokesman said: “We would like to apologise for any disruption while a team is working to repair a burst pipe on Abbey Foregate.

"While we had initially set up these works under temporary traffic lights, due to the location of the burst and to keep everyone safe, we have extended this to a road closure.

“We know that that this can be a busy route into Shrewsbury and our teams will be working hard to get the repair made, the road surface reinstated and everything back to normal as quickly as possible.”
