In an appeal on social media West Mercia Police officers have urged drivers to be patient.

Senior PCSO Angie Roberts said: ""Could we bring your attention to the current traffic issues in Shrewsbury Town Centre.  Smithfield Road, Shrewsbury coming into town from the Welsh Bridge reduces to single lane by the Premier Inn due to the ongoing roadworks causing long delays.

"We would ask drivers to please be patient whilst this lane closure remains in place. At this time we are unsure how long these roadworks will remain in place.    Thank you for your cooperation."
