Cadent said its engineers will be completing work on a gas main on the outskirts of Shifnal.
It comes after a number of people raised the issue of a strong smell of gas along Priorslee Road - with a 'no smoking' sign placed at one section of the road.
Cadent said it had sent several teams of engineers to examine the issue and had found a number of 'gas escapes along the gas mains'.
The utilities firm said it would now be carrying out 'complex repairs' and added that although the work would cause disruption the crews would 'work as quickly and safely' as they can to complete the repairs.
Andy Bates, customer operations area manager for Cadent, said: “After reports of a smell of a gas, we sent several teams of engineers to the local area.
"Following investigations, we quickly discovered multiple gas escapes along the gas mains. We would like to reassure the community that we have everything under control.
"The actions taken by the Cadent team have ensured everyone is safe, but we now need to complete some complex repairs.
"This will be a challenging job, and whilst we know that will cause disruption, we will work as quickly and as safely as we can to complete these works. Thank you for your patience and understanding.
“We’d also like to thank the members of the public who reported the smell of gas and remind you that if you smell gas, anywhere, call the gas emergency service on 0800 111 999”.
