Manhunt launched after wheelie bins dropped on vehicles from bridge over busy A442 in Telford

Police have launched a manhunt after wheelie bins were dropped onto vehicles from a bridge over a busy dual carriageway.

The first of the shocking incidents took place in the early hours of Monday (January 27) on the A442 in Telford.

A vehicle was struck, extensively damaging the windscreen, with two people requiring hospital treatment.

A second happened at around 1am today (Friday, January 31).

The second incident involved a heavy goods vehicle - with the driver fortunately escaping unhhurt.

West Mercia Police said the wheelie bins were dropped from the Wombridge footbridge over the busy carriageway.

Police have launched an appeal to track down those responsible, warning their actions could have devastating consequences.

They have released images of people they cay could have "vital information" to help with enquiries.

A statement from West Mercia Police said: "Officers have released CCTV images after a wheelie bin was dropped from a bridge in Telford, which struck a vehicle.

"The incident happened on Monday at around 1.50am at the Wombridge footbridge over the A442 as the car travelled on the northbound carriageway.

"The wheelie bin struck the vehicle, which caused extensive damage to the windscreen, and resulted in two people requiring hospital treatment.

"A second incident, believed to be linked, happened at around 1am this morning when a wheelie bin was dropped off the same bridge striking a HGV. The driver of the HGV was unhurt.

"Officers believe the people in the CCTV images may have been in the area at the time of incident on Monday and may have information that can help with their enquiries."

Detective Inspector Paul Drury added: “This sort of behaviour is reckless, and not only can it cause serious damage to vehicles, but even more worryingly, it can result in serious injury to those travelling in the vehicle and potentially cause a devastating collision.

"Fortunately, on these two occasions no one sustained any serious or life-threatening injuries.

“We believe these two incidents are linked and are appealing to the public for their help in identifying the two people in the CCTV images, as we believe they have vital information that can help with our enquiries.”
