Councillors from Market Drayton Town Council met to consider the recommendation by the Town Centre Action Working Group who were consulted to find ways to improve the area.

A 52-point 'Town Centre Action Plan' has been submitted to the council.

Councillors have voted to utilise a PR and marketing company to work with businesses, make the town more attractive to visitors, have a new website and social media channels set up and new branding for the town.

Deputy Mayor in Market Drayton, Councillor Tim Manton welcomed the news.

He said: "This is part of the report that we had commissioned by the retail group and what we are calling the town centre action plan.

"That is a 52 point plan to improve the town centre visually and improve it for people living in the town, but we are also desperate to to attract visitors and tourists to Market Drayton. So it is all part of those ambitions.

"It was identified by the report that as a town you need strong marketing and PR which as a town we don't have.

"At council we voted to appoint the services of a marking and PR company that is going to work alongside the town council to promote the town, improve the town, cconsult with local businesses.

"There will be lots of things coming like new social media and a new website to promote Market Drayton to its fullest, not only to the people that live in the town but to attract visitors."

Mr Manton said the PR and marketing company will work with Visit Shropshire and businesses within the North Shropshire town to improve its offerings.

An appendix for the council meeting on Thursday, January 23 said costs relating to the contract for a period between February 1 and March 31 this year will be paid from money in 'Earmarked Reserves'.

Meanwhile, for the period between April 1 and March 31 next year, it said "£20,000 to be ringfenced from the Communication and Promotion budget to cover costs specifically relating to the services provided by the successful applicant."

It added that expenditure from the budget will be monitored and reported back to the committee by the working group.
