There's no doubt about it - farming is changing fast.

As someone who spends every day working with farmers and landowners, I can see the pressures and opportunities that are heading our way this year.

Here are a few issues keeping farmers awake at night, and more importantly, what we can do about it.

Money matters: The biggest talking point is definitely the shake-up in farming payments.

If you're in England and previously received £30,000 in direct payments, you're looking at a maximum of £7,200 now.

That's a hefty cut by anyone's standards. Many farmers I work with are already exploring new income streams or different business models to bridge this gap.

Whether it's diversification or restructuring your business, it's worth getting advice early to make sure you're on solid ground.

Tech savvy farming: I'm seeing more and more farms embracing digital technology - from GPS-guided tractors to drone mapping.

It's exciting stuff, but it comes with its own challenges. Who owns the data your smart machinery is collecting?

What happens if something goes wrong? These might seem like minor details when you're busy with harvest, but getting the right contracts in place now can prevent complications later.

The inheritance question: Here's something that's causing real worry in farming families - changes to inheritance tax reliefs for agricultural and business property.

It’s vital that succession plans are reviewed. Having a clear plan for passing on your farm isn't just about tax - it's about protecting what you've built for the next generation.

Looking ahead: If there's one thing I've learned working with farmers, it's that they're incredibly adaptable. Yes, 2025 brings challenges, but it also brings opportunities.

The key is staying ahead of the game and getting good advice when you need it.
