Shropshire school catering company celebrates success at Excellence in School Food Awards 2025

A company that provides catering, food advice and services to schools and venues in Shropshire has triumphed at the prestigious All Party Parliamentary Group Excellence in School Food Awards 2025.

Shropshire Council was "thrilled" to announce that Shire Services' initiatives and work to promote healthy eating among children has been recognised with the 'Group' category award.

The Excellence in School Food Awards celebrate outstanding achievements in promoting healthy eating and improving school food standards across the UK.

This year Shire Services' marketing planner, which features 21 initiatives for schools to choose from, stood out among the competition. 

Shropshire Council said the planner has led to a "remarkable 19 per cent increase in meal income", alongside improved client loyalty and better community engagement.

The local authority added that the planner has received positive feedback from schools and parents which highlights the success of the initiative in promoting healthy eating and supporting educational outcomes.

General manager Susan Vuli and area manager (catering) Lauren Moore were also recognised as finalists in the 'Individuals' category, and each received a certificate for their contributions.

The county council said Susan’s initiatives in fitness, wellbeing, staff development, and community engagement have "transformed the work environment, fostering a culture of support and excellence".

Meanwhile, Lauren's efforts in client care, meal income increase and promoting healthy eating habits among students "have been equally impactful".

Shropshire Council’s cabinet member for housing and assets, Dean Carroll, expressed his pride in the team’s achievements, saying: "We are incredibly proud of our Shire Services team for their outstanding work in promoting healthy eating among children. Winning the Group category award at the APPG Excellence in School Food Awards 2025 is a testament to their dedication and innovation.

"The 19 per cent increase in meal income and enhanced community engagement are clear indicators of their success. This recognition further motivates us to continue our efforts in making a positive impact on the health and wellbeing of our community."

The council’s initiatives include the marketing planner that is implemented in primary schools across the region and features 21 initiatives to boost engagement and income.

Meanwhile, curriculum cooking clubs aim to provide weekly sessions for more than 700 children, teaching them cooking skills and promoting healthy eating.

Moreover, there is the mascot 'Sammy Sweetcorn' who engages with children and gardening clubs that aim to educate children on planting and harvesting.

Shropshire Council said Shire Services has also been shortlisted for two Contract Catering Awards (CCA).

Susan has been shortlisted for the 'People Development' award while Shire Services as a whole has been shortlisted for the 'Marketing' award.

The CCA awards ceremony will take place on March 3.
