To mark National Apprenticeship Week 2025 (10-16 February), the council is celebrating employing over 25 apprentices in a variety of services including finance, housing, ICT, engineering and highways, with many excelling in awards.
Daisy Evans, an apprentice in the council’s Property Design Team was awarded runner up in last year's Local Government Apprentice of the Year awards.
As part of the award, Daisy was tested on a series of activities, designed to mirror real-life decision making by councils.
To further her studies, Daisy will now be going on to complete a course through The Open University, whilst continuing her work with the council.
A special mention also goes to Paige Dixon, an apprentice at a Flying Start provider in Powys, who was successful at the Skills Academy Wales Work-Based Learning Partnership Awards 2024.
Many other apprentices were successful in the council’s staff awards:
Jade Price - Apprentice Training Administrator in Children’s Services came runner-up in Newcomer Award.
Sam Evans - Apprentice ICT Service Desk Operator winner of the Young Employee Award.
Leah Roginson - Administrator HTR, former apprentice came runner-up in the Young Employee Award.
Councillor Jake Berriman, Powys County Council’s Cabinet member with responsibility for HR and workforce, said: “I would like to congratulate all our apprentices for their hard work and commitment.
“We are proud to invest in our staff by offering people like Daisy a chance to learn and gain qualifications while earning.”
“We have also committed to paying our apprentices the Real Living Wage too - an hourly rate based on the cost of living which is independently set.”
He added: “If you are inspired to by Daisy’s story, and interested in a new opportunity, I would encourage you to look out for future apprenticeships at: www.powys.gov.uk/jobs. You can also sign-up to our Talent Pool mailing list where you will be contacted directly if a suitable apprenticeship comes up.”
