National Rail Enquiries said that the incident, near Welshpool, means that there is disruption for trains travelling between Aberystwyth and Birmingham International - through Mid Wales and Shropshire.
It said that trains could be cancelled as a result. It was initially hoped the issues would be resolved by 12.15pm - but that has now been extended to 3.30pm.
An update on the National Rail Enquiries website said: "A fault with the barriers at a level crossing in the Welshpool area means that all lines are blocked.
"As a result, trains running between Machynlleth and Shrewsbury may be cancelled or revised."
