M54 repairs to close motorway for eight full weekends

National Highways have said that the M54, between junction 2 (Coven Heath) and 4 (Castlefarm Interchange/Telford Services) will be closed for eight full weekends so they can carry out repairs.

The work will begin on February 27 and is set to cost in the region of £3 million.

Repairs will be undertaken on both sides of the carriageway, but the closures will be in place in one direction at a time.

The road will also be closed overnight between junctions 2 and 4 on the Thursdays prior to the works to allow traffic management to be put in place and the weekend closures will run from 8pm on Friday until 6am on Monday.

National Highways project manager, Dan Bothwick said: “We have carefully considered the delivery of this scheme and have planned full weekend closures to enable us to carry out our work safely and allow the concrete to set to the required strength.

“Traffic flows are also lower at the weekend and to reduce the impact on drivers we’ll also close the M54 in one direction at a time.

“We have also worked closely with local authorities to minimise disruption on their local roads and some signal timings have been adjusted to allow for the extra traffic.

“We do appreciate that any roadworks can be disruptive, and we’d like to thank drivers and the local community for their patience while we carry out this essential maintenance.”

During the work fully signed diversion routes will be in place via Castle Farm Way, A5 Watling Street, A449 Stafford Road, and A41 Newport Road.

Closures

Work will be carried out between February 27 to 21 April 2025 with the following closures:

Thursday, February 27 from 8pm to 6am and Friday, February 28 at 8pm to 5am Monday, March 3 - M54 eastbound junction 4 to junction 3 closed.

Thursday, March 6 from 8pm to 6am and Friday, March 7 at 8pm to 5am Monday, March 10 - M54 eastbound junction 4 to junction 3 closed.

Thursday, March 13 from 8pm to 6am and Friday, March 14 at 8pm to 5am Monday, March 17 - M54 eastbound junction 4 to junction 2 closed.

Thursday, March 20 from 8pm to 6am and Friday, March 21 at 8pm to 5am Monday, March 24 - M54 eastbound junction 3 to junction 2 closed.

Thursday, March 27 from 8pm to 6am and Friday, March 28 at 8pm to 5am Monday, March 31 - M54 eastbound junction 3 to junction 2 closed.

Thursday, April 3 from 8pm to 6am and Friday, April 4 at 8pm to 5am Monday, April 7 - M54 eastbound junction 4 to junction 2 closed.

Thursday, April 10 from 8pm to 6am and Friday, April 11 at 8pm to 5am Monday, April 14 - M54 westbound junction 2 to junction 3 closed.

Thursday, April 17 from 8pm to 6am and Friday, April 18 at 8pm to 5am Monday, April 21 - M54 westbound junction 2 to junction 3 closed.
