Man arrested for making ‘sexual and distressing’ comments to woman walking along Newport canal

Police arrested a man after he made “sexual and distressing” comments to a woman walking along the canal in Newport.

West Mercia Police received a report about the incident, which took place in Chetwynd End, Newport, at 4.40pm last Sunday (February 9). 

The 38-year-old man, who was seen on CCTV, was arrested on the suspicion of using threatening/abusive insulting words/behaviour to cause harassment/alarm/distress.

West Mercia Police said: “We received a report at around 4.40pm on Sunday (9 February) that a man had followed a woman along the canal path in Chetwynd End, Newport, and then made sexual and distressing comments towards her.

 “Following further enquiries, including the review of CCTV, a 38-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of using threatening/abusive/insulting words/behaviour to cause harassment/alarm/distress.

“He was dealt with through the means of a community resolution.”
