Last year, residents and traders gathered in the pouring rain in Wellington's town square on Shrove Tuesday for the first-ever Pancake Day celebration.

In what was ultimately dubbed the 'pan-Tefalon', on-lookers were invited to take part in a range of games from a flower toss to an egg-and-spoon race.

Now, preparations are underway for the second incarnation of the event - the 'Great Wellington Pancake Race'.

The celebration, which will take place on Saturday, March 8, is being organised by Jon Drew of the Boardroom Gaming Cafe in New Street.

“Representatives of businesses from different parts of Wellington, together with Love Wellington, are coming together for some pancake-based activities,” Jon explained.

“It’s a great excuse for people from across the town to join forces, have a bit of fun and take part in some crazy games.

“We are looking for businesses to participate and for volunteers to help at the event, which will kick off at 11am.”

As well as the race in the town centre there will be a special family film being shown at the Wellington Orbit on the day, with showings at 11.30am and 2pm.
