Emergency services were called to the scene of a collision after a pick-up truck collided with a barrier and rolled onto railway lines near Craven Arms on Tuesday night.

The incident happened at around 6.50pm at the A49 level crossing at Onibury.

A spokesperson for Church Stretton Fire Station said crews undertook a "managed extraction" of the driver.

Trains were cancelled for the rest of the evening while the vehicle was recovered and an inspection of the lines took place.

An update from Network Rail said: "Owing to a van crashing on a level crossing on Onibury, Shropshire, the line will be closed between Shrewsbury and Hereford for the rest of the day.

"No trains were involved in this incident and the barriers at the crossing were raised at the time the vehicle crashed.

"Emergency services are on site and our engineers will assess any damage to the crossing."

While trains were running again on Wednesday, disruption was expected to continue. An update from National Rail said: "An obstruction on the track between Shrewsbury and Hereford means that trains have to run at a reduced speed on all lines.

"Trains running between these stations may be delayed by up to 30 minutes. Disruption is expected until 12pm."

A spokesperson for West Midlands Ambulance Service said a passing ambulance crew came upon the collision just before 7pm.

They said: "A passing ambulance crew came across an RTC at Onibury Level Crossing off the A49, Onibury at 6.59pm. A truck had come off the road and ended up on its side.

"The driver, a man, was already out of the vehicle and was assessed by staff for potentially serious injuries but did not wish to go to hospital and so was discharged at the scene."

British Transport Police have been approached for further information.
