The county of Shropshire is a large and welcoming place for people looking for a good meal, with restaurants, cafes, pubs and restaurants alike all offering fine dining and great drinks.

Ahead of Shropshire Day, we've taken a look around the county and picked out 10 of the best places to visit for a meal, a drink and a friendly welcome.

From restaurants run by professional chefs to award-winning chip shops and cosy cafes, this list provides a sample of the flavours available for foodies to try.

Set on the banks of the River Severn, The Walrus owners and chefs Ben and Carla run the two-floored restaurant.

Customers are able to watch them both in action in the open kitchen, where their take on modern cooking delivers a blend of pronounced flavours and contrasting textures.

Local ingredients help to make up the diverse menu, with duck, cod and a cheese soufflé all popular parts of the menu.

2. Mortimers

Owned and run by chef Wayne Smith, Mortimers offers a fine range of both British and French cuisine.

The restaurant works with local producers to get the best ingredients, with meat, game, fruit and vegetables all available from the local area and seafood brought in from the coast.

The menu changes according to the seasons, with dishes including lamb and asparagus in spring and game and vegetables in autumn.

3. Wild Shropshire
