Newport Town Council is set to upgrade the public toilets on the Stafford Street car park with a refurbishment that they say will make them "modern, efficient, and more resistant to vandalism".
The refurbishment will include the installation of new all-in-one handwash and dry units, new cubicle doors with anti-vandal locks, upgraded toilets, new flooring, and enhanced anti graffiti coating on the wall tiling.
These improvements aim to future-proof the facilities by making them more water and energy-efficient while also improving their durability.
Over the years the toilets have been the subject of several attacks by vandals. In 2022, the council was forced to reduce their opening times and start locking the loos at 3pm after "continuous vadalism".
Town Clerk Jo Reay commented: “At a time when many local councils are closing down public toilets, we are looking for different solutions to vandalism and running costs.
"We recognise the importance of this public facility for our residents and visitors.”
The works will encompass all restroom areas, including the ladies, gents, disabled, and baby changing facilities, ensuring a more pleasant experience for both residents and visitors to the town.
The refurbishment work is scheduled to commence on Monday, February 24, and will continue for approximately eight weeks.
