A controversial new parking system will start in a town car park next month.

Tesco was recently granted permission to put automatic number-plate recognition cameras in its car park in White Lion Meadow, Whitchurch, along with other signs warning motorists of the parking-time limit.

It comes after the supermarket installed signs before getting planning permission from Shropshire Council, provoking anger from residents and the town council.

The unitary authority received more than 20 letters of objection from residents who said White Lion Meadow is a public/community car park and should remain as such.

However, Tesco bosses said they had been approached by some customers who said they found it difficult to park there to carry out their food shop.

Jessica Walker, spokeswoman for Tesco, said: "The new ANPR system in the car park at Whitchurch Tesco will take effect from May 1.

"There is three hours of free parking available. This step has been taken as customers informed us they sometimes find it difficult to park."
