Will Macken from Shropshire Salumi has won the Food & Farming Industry Awards 2018 for his business

Shropshire Salumi has taken the title of Food Innovation of the Year at the 2018 Food and Farming Industry Awards which were hosted by former British Ambassador to the US and Germany, Sir Christopher Meyer, at the House of Commons.

The company uses artisan methods for its salami range. All the pork they use is outdoor-reared Gloucester Old Spot, and the rate of the company’s growth has led to a number of collaborations with neighbouring producers.

The Food and Farming Industry Awards are staged annually by Farm Business and Lewis Business to recognise excellence and innovation across the agricultural sector.

Will Macken, owner of Shropshire Salumi said: “It’s really great to get this unexpected recognition for all my hard work over the last couple of years.

“I consider myself extremely lucky that creating great products from high welfare locally-reared, traditional breeds is my passion and I’ve been able to turn this into a business. I’m a zoologist by trade, so the welfare and provenance is really high on the agenda.

“Shropshire is such a great place to work with the wealth of artisan creators here, and the support of other businesses in collaboration with my venture has been fantastic. There’s still plenty of hard work, I’m always developing new products and it’s a continual learning process, but I’m really happy where the business currently stands.”

Farm Business publisher Simon Lewis said: “Congratulations to Shropshire Salumi who were deserved winners on the night.

“Once again these awards have highlighted the breadth and depth of talent, drive and ambition in the farming sector. We are delighted to recognise the achievements of the winners, but also all of those shortlisted, which, in itself, is a great achievement.”

Chair of judges Meurig Raymond said: “It was a real privilege to chair the judging panel and every category posed real dilemmas for the judging panel, such was the excellence of all the entries. Huge congratulations to all the winners who each managed to demonstrate something different and special about their businesses.”
