Civic campaigners want detailed records taken from Shrewsbury wartime site before bulldozers move in
One of Shrewsbury's last sites with links to both World Wars could be bulldozed - and heritage campaigners are calling for a complete photographic record to be made before it is too late.
Shrewsbury firm Morris and Company has applied for permission to demolish former RAF buildings at Centurion Park, Kendal Road, and to build 24 light industrial units in their place.
In the early part of the 20th century the sprawling site in Harlescott was a massive military base and much of it still survives in the buildings there. But if the planning application is granted they will be flattened and replaced by modern light industrial buildings.
Michael Dinneen, of Shrewsbury Civic Society, said the plan is supported in principle but the group is concerned that it is one of the few remaining tangible examples of the history of Shrewsbury during the first and second World Wars.
Mr Dinneen said: "We recognise that the buildings proposed to be demolished are non-designated heritage assets and strongly urge a thorough building recording exercise prior to demolition with a detailed photographic record of the site and buildings.
"Maybe there could be a photographic exhibition somewhere, I am sure it would be of great interest.
"The society is concerned however, that this site and buildings are one of the few remaining tangible examples of the history of Shrewsbury during WW1 and WW2."
