Reconomy switches to renewable electricity as part of net zero plans
Telford headquartered Reconomy has partnered with Bryt Energy to provide zero carbon, 100 per cent renewable electricity across its UK business.
The partnership sees Reconomy meet its target of increasing its active annual sourcing of renewable electricity from 86 per cent in 2021 to 100 per cent by 2028, four years early in the UK and will help Reconomy on its journey to reach net zero GHG (greenhouse gas) emissions across its value chain by 2040.
The agreement was brokered by Adalta Energy and will deliver cost-savings of around 20 per cent and will provide real-time data usage through the installation of advanced 15-minute meters.
The milestone is a key component of Reconomy’s sustainable procurement strategy, which given the scale of the business, is critical to its wider sustainability strategy and to achieving key climate targets.
In 2023, Reconomy appointed a Group Procurement Director to lead and establish a strategic enterprise-wide approach to procurement including the implementation of its Sustainable Procurement Policy based on the ISO 20400 Sustainable Procurement Guidance Standard.
Reconomy has several additional sustainable procurement initiatives underway across the business. In 2024, Reconomy transitioned 80 per cent of its diesel cars to electric / hybrid vehicles and in 2025, it plans to go further by expanding office charging points and redesigning its company car fleet to accelerate the adoption of Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs).
Later in 2025, Reconomy will look to recontract its gas supply and will leverage improved data insights to target further energy usage reductions.
Simon Dennett, International Procurement Category Director at Reconomy, said: "I am pleased that we agreed this partnership.
"All our international brands are aligned behind a single sustainable procurement strategy and this, along with many further exciting green initiatives underway, will help us advance sustainability, accelerate circularity and create a waste-free world.”
Diane Crowe, Group Sustainability Director at Reconomy, added: “As a business centred on accelerating the circular economy to tackle climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution, we are keen to demonstrate leadership in our industry. This partnership will help us in that mission and will support us on our journey to achieving our ambitious sustainability targets.”
Ian Brothwell, Managing Director of Bryt Energy, added: “We are delighted to be supplying Reconomy with zero carbon, 100% renewable electricity and supporting them in their sustainability journey. We are excited to watch the business accelerate circularity and help businesses make better use of their resources and reduce waste.”
Ed Butler, of Adalta Energy, added: “We are delighted to have been able to support Reconomy Group with their transition to a renewable power supply and look forward to working in partnership with the business on future Net Zero projects.”
