Shrewsbury drug dealer sent back to prison
A man with a string of convictions has been sent back to prison after just six days after he was arrested on suspicion of supplying drugs.
Robert Jamieson, 48, of Shrewsbury, was only released from his previous jail term on May 9 on licence with conditions to stay out of trouble.
Miss Abigail Hall, prosecuting, said the defendant who has 23 convictions including for burglary, was recalled by his probation officer on May 11 following his arrests, but he failed to hand himself in to a police station as instructed. He admitted an offence of failing to take necessary steps to return to prison between May 10 and 14 at Telford Magistrates Court yesterday.
She told the court that despite promising to hand himself in on May he did not and was arrested at a property near Shrewsbury Police Station two days later.
Miss Jenny Hancock, defending, said: “He did not appreciate that he was being treated as a prisoner at large.”
District Judge Nigel Cadbury told the court that it was an odd situation as the breach of the licence related to the new offence which was still under police investigation.
“It seems this is a device to get you into custody.
“But it’s up to others to sort out recall matters,” Mr Cadbury said.
He sentenced him to 14 days’ custody. He ordered Jamieson to pay £115 victims’ surcharge and no costs.
