'How can people be so evil' - More than £3,600 raised for elderly woman after shocking purse snatch during Aldi shopping trip
An appeal to raise money for an 87-year-old who had her purse stolen in an Oswestry supermarket has now reached £3,600.
The woman was shopping in the Aldi on Oswald Road on Tuesday morning, when two men carried out a distraction theft.
Concerned resident Amanda Williams set up a JustGiving page on Wednesday evening, to raise £200 for the victim. But less than 48 hours later the total had reached £3,076.
Miss Williams said she wanted to show the lady there ‘is still some good in the world,’ and all the donations will be given to Oswestry Police Station, and forwarded on to the victim.
On Thursday evening, Miss Williams wrote on the fundraising page: “The response has been amazing. Thank you every single one of you who has liked or shared or donated. I am so proud of you all.”
Some of the people who have donated have expressed their shock.
Audrey Biscotti said: "There are more good people in the world than bad, we need to remember. I hope they are found and made to face this lady to apologise before being sentenced. Such a low thing to do."
Vicky Smith said: "It made me cry. How can people be so evil."
Jemma Horsfall said: "This made me so sad and angry."
The hunt for the two suspects in the theft continues with police still appealing for information.
CCTV images captured the woman wheeling her trolley around the supermarket at 10.25am, with a man distracting her by showing her items on the shelf.
As he does this, the other man appears to spend around 10 seconds rooting through her bag, before taking it and walking down the aisle.
Police are searching for the men are described as eastern European and in their 40s.
One man is said to have short hair and was wearing a smart blue jacket, while the other was bald with glasses, stocky and wearing a black jacket.
Anyone with information is asked to ring police on 101.
